Delmonico Dr Maintenance Update

Many thanks to one of our Discovery neighbors, Gary Morrell, who was proactive in contacting the city to look into the upcoming utilities and paving projects on Delmonico Dr. While we were forewarned that the city would be repaving much of Delmonico Dr this year, it now appears that this project will be more like the major work that was done last fall south of Rockrimmon Blvd, rather than the quick repaving "patch" they did earlier from Rockrimmon to Carlson Dr.

Gary noticed the small mention of repaving and CSU (Colorado Springs Utilities) activities on Delmonico near the end of our most recent newsletter and expressed concern that we may have no idea how much disruptive construction is slated for Delmonico Drive this year.

Gary sent us an email detailing what he learned from CSU and suggested we disseminate that info to our members. What follows is the key information Gary was able to glean:

Last year he spoke with the engineering and survey teams for the CSU water main replacement project that will stretch from about the Carlson Drive intersection well up Delmonico Dr, near the upper end of Discovery. He recently made contact with Margaret Radford at CSU. As the Issues Management Consultant that CSU assigned to these projects, Margaret is responsible for scheduling and community relations. She said this water main replacement is slated to begin mid-April and is scheduled to last 6-8 weeks. This requires big equipment and six foot deep ditches that will disrupt street use and homeowner driveway access in a big way.

City street crews have recently been paint-marking curbs and sidewalks on Delmonico for overlay preparation. Gary's walking-around assessment of this is that pretty much every bit of concrete that wasn't replaced in 2015 in slated to be replaced this year, and this has to be complete before milling and re-paving, which is currently scheduled for August, but the engineer in him thinks this is mighty optimistic.

He believes we are about to get an all-summer long construction bombshell dropped in our laps, and he asked us to communicate this before the heavy equipment shows up in droves.

Our thanks again to Gary. This work will undoubtedly mean some of us will have to change traffic patterns, make alternate parking arrangements, or suffer inconveniences due to blocked driveways.  Please start now to plan how you will deal with these disruptions.
