Water Wise Landscape Classes - FREE 

Colorado Springs Utilities offers a series of classes throughout the summer at the Mesa Road Conservation and Environmental Center (see directions below) to help customers learn how to establish and maintain waterwise landscapes. The 2019 class schedule is now set.  All classes are FREE and open to to public.  Reservations are not required but seating is limited and first come, first served.

Water Wise Landscape Design: Wed, Apr 3, 6-7:30 PM. Learn how to analyze your current landscape, determine what you need from your new landscape and how to get it on paper for a functional, sustainable and beautiful yard.

Landscaping How-To: Wed, Apr 17, 6-7:30 PM. Learn how to choose durable materials, remove existing vegetation, prepare the soil, install hardscape, mulch and plant.

Drip Irrigation DIY: Sat, Apr 20, 9-10:30 AM. A mixture of lecture and hands-on activities, this class covers the advantages of drip irrigation, choices of components, how to design a system, and guidelines to provide the right amount of water to your plants.

Firewise Landscaping: Wed, Apr 24, 6-7 PM. Learn the design elements of a firewise landscape, and selection of firewise and water wise plant material. This class is particularly relevant for our foothills neighbors and includes resources/fact sheets available from CSFD and Colorado Springs Utilities.

Blue Grama and Buffalograss Lawns: Sat, Apr 27, 9-10:30 AM. Learn other options than Kentucky bluegrass exist for a water wise yard, and which one is best for you. Learn what's required to prepare a site, then install and maintain it.

Water Wise Landscape Design: Sat, May 4, 9-10:30 AM. Last chance to catch this class (see Apr 3 above).

Winning Against Weeds:  Wed, May 8, 9-10:30 AM. Learn about practical solutions for short-term landscape weed control and long-term prevention. 

Plant Select: Smart Plants for the Right Places: Wed, May 15, 6-7 PM. Each year, through the Plant Select Program, Colorado State University and Denver Botanic Gardens seek out the best plants for gardens that flourish with less water, thrive in a broad range of conditions and in short, provide more beauty with less work.  Learn about the program and the plants that make the cut!

Outstanding Water Wise Plant Combos: Wed, May 22, 6-7:30 PM. Want to learn more about easy, reliable, low water plants? This class covers everything from trees to perennials with pictures and plant descriptions -- especially helpful for those new to gardening in the Pikes Peak region!

Habitat Heroes: Wildscaping 101: Sat, May 25, 9-10:30 AM. Learn how to create wildlife-friendly gardens that help combat the loss of open spaces and create green corridors that link your wildscape to larger natural areas by providing wildlife habitat.

Efficiency Expo Open House : Sat, Jun 22, 9 AM-1:00 PM. Enjoy the Conservation & Environmental Center Open House where you can meet with water and energy efficiency experts to learn money saving tips, tour the demonstration garden, experience fun activities, get help with home/garden questions and enter to win prizes.

Tour of Tough Plants: Wed, Jul 17, 5-6 PM. Class will show you what water wise plants look like in their mature form, point out solutions to common landscape challenges, and highlight eye-catching plant combinations. Tours will highlight plants in bloom.

Directions to the Mesa Road Conservation and Environmental Center: 
  • From Centennial Boulevard, take 30th Street to the first left past Garden of the Gods Road (but not at the turn just past the gas station!)  The Center is approximately 1.5 miles on the left (look for the TALL flower artworks at the entrance).

  • From Interstate 25, take the Fillmore Street exit and proceed west to Mesa Road. Turn north (right) on Mesa Road and the Center will be approximately 1/2 mile on the right (look for the TALL flower artworks at the entrance).
